This is a full evening experience — not just a dinner, not just a conversation. Three hours designed to move with energy and purpose, built around two of motorsport’s most celebrated names, and unlike anything this region has hosted before.

Derek Bell is a five-time Le Mans winner and three-time Daytona 24 victor whose career is inseparable from Porsche’s greatest racing era. His son Justin Bell is a Le Mans winner and one of the most recognizable voices in global automotive media. Together, they bring a program of storytelling, insight, and humor that reflects decades at the highest levels of the sport.

From arrival through the live auction and into the closing conversation, every hour of this evening is intentional. Join us at The Grand at 81 Mary for a night that builds from the moment you walk in.

The Venue: A Convergence of History and Horsepower

The Grand at 81 Mary

We are proud to host this event within a true Charleston landmark. Constructed circa 1857, this historic red-brick structure was originally a vital component of the South Carolina Railroad complex.

As the former Gas Engine Building, these walls once housed the massive machinery that powered one of the most ambitious railroad schemes in the antebellum South. It is only fitting that a building designed to celebrate the birth of industrial horsepower now serves as the backdrop for a conversation with the legends of modern automotive endurance. Guests will enjoy the building’s soaring ceilings and meticulous restoration—a space that rivals the world’s finest luxury hotels in both scale and sophistication.

Why Charleston? Why Now?:

Many of our members have crossed paths with Oliver Bell at club events over the past few years — he has been a familiar and welcome presence in our community. The reason Derek Bell is coming to Charleston is straightforward: Oliver is graduating from The Citadel.

That is the whole story. A father traveling to watch his son graduate from one of the country’s most storied military colleges — and because of that, an opportunity for our region that does not come around twice. We are in the right place at the right time, and we intend to make the most of it.

Curated by Duvall Catering & Decor

Cocktail Hour & Passed Hors D’oeuvres (5:00 PM) Begin the evening with a premium open bar and a selection of hand-passed Lowcountry bites, including:

  • Lobster Vol au Vent: Poached lobster with tarragon cream in a puffed pastry.
  • Cheerwine Glazed Pork Belly: A Southern classic with compressed watermelon.
  • Mini Tomato Pie: Heirloom tomatoes and white cheddar pimento cheese.
  • Spicy Fried Chicken Bite: Alabama White Sauce and Pickle Chips

Chef-Attended Dinner Stations (6:00 PM) Experience a “small plate” tasting journey featuring the best of Charleston’s culinary heritage:

  • Signature Shrimp & Grits: Sautéed shrimp over local yellow grits with Tasso gravy and crumbled bacon.
  • Braised Beef Short Ribs: Served with buttermilk mashed potatoes and caramelized Brussels sprouts.
  • Bacon Wrapped Pork Tenderloin: Finished with a maple-sage marinade and roasted sweet potatoes.

The Grand Dessert Display (7:00 PM) A decadent collection of mini-sweets, featuring our signature Pluff Mud Porter Mousse, Key Lime tarts, and banana pudding shooters.

The Bar Program: Premium Selections

Our four-hour open bar features a curated selection of domestic and local favorites:

  • Local Craft Beer: Featuring Westbrook White Thai and Holy City’s “Overly Friendly” IPA.
  • Premium Wines: Including 2023 Pavette Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley) and Riff Pinot Grigio (Italy).
  • Specialty Cocktails: Two signature Charleston-inspired drinks will be served—the 917 Old Fashioned and the Iron Horse Mojito.

Live Auction — Giving for Good:

The evening includes a professionally led live auction hosted by Erin Kinsel of Giving for Good. Erin brings the kind of energy that keeps a room engaged, and the lots are curated specifically for this audience — travel packages, driving experiences, and exclusive Porsche items, including pieces personally signed and personalized by Derek Bell.

This is not a catalog auction. It is a live experience, and it is built into the flow of the evening.
